OUR HISTORY

The Lexington Paralegal Association was established in 1980 to promote the paralegal profession in Lexington and surrounding communities. In 1994 its membership voted to change the Association’s name to Greater Lexington Paralegal Association. The GLPA serves as a forum for paralegals to exchange ideas, opinions and concerns. Through the Association, we hope to increase the awareness of the public, judiciary and legal communities of the scope of paralegal responsibilities.

Membership is comprised of practicing paralegals and students enrolled in paralegal programs and paralegals not currently employed as paralegals. Sustaining membership includes law firms, colleges, universities, local business and individuals.

Donald E. Eppler Commitment Award

In 1996, the paralegal profession lost a great man, Don E. Eppler. Don was the 1985 Vice President; 1991 Board at Large Member; 1994 Treasurer and 1995 President of the Greater Lexington Paralegal Association. He also was a founding member of the Kentucky Paralegal Association and served on the Paralegal Advisory Council of Sullivan College. Don graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor’s degree in May 1982 and was a member of Pi Lambda Alpha, a paralegal honor society. He first worked as a real estate paralegal for Brown, Sledd and McCann (firm eventually merged into Wyatt, Tarrant and Combs).

He was a proponent of higher education and networking for the paralegal profession. Don showed paralegals the benefits of hard work and dedication. He always had a word of wisdom, a funny joke, or simply something to say on just about any subject. The GLPA Board became strong because of the dedication of Don. He gave everything he could give, until he could give no more.

The 1996 GLPA Board renamed the outstanding GLPA member award to the “Donald E. Eppler Commitment Award” as to honor his great love, enthusiasm and commitment for the GLPA and the paralegal profession. This honor has been given each year since.
